"t this moment, I would like to thank the evangelical community who have been so good to me and so supportive. You have so much to contribute to our politics, yet our laws prevent you from speaking your minds from your own pulpits.

- Trump RNC Acceptance Speech, July 2016

The "Johnson Amendment" bars tax-exempt charitable groups, which the Internal Revenue Service calls “section 501(c)(3) organizations,” from endorsing candidates and getting involved in political campaigns. Because churches fall under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code, the ban applies to them as well.

Trump reaffirmed his promise during a speech made at the National Prayer Breakfast in February 2017.
